What’s it like to work at Kruze Consulting?

Kruze Consulting is a highly recognized and prestigious startup advisory brand. If you’re interested in knowing more about working at Kruze Consulting, COO Scott Orn appeared on the Earmark Podcast with host Blake Oliver. Scott and Blake discuss working as a remote accountant and how Kruze is different from other firms, including:

  • Kruze’s growth. As of mid 2023, the company has increased from a small firm to 165 employees with over 800 startups and early-stage clients.
  • Kruze’s culture. Our core values include innovation and continuous improvement, and we actively search for new hires that share those values and proactively deliver value and service to our clients.
  • Kruze’s clients. We work exclusively with startups and early-stage companies, who are creating some of the most exciting and transformative products and services in the world.
  • Kruze’s workplace. Our staff is 100% remote, giving us the opportunity to hire the best and brightest talent from around the world.

We hope you enjoy the podcast and the opportunity to learn more about working at Kruze Consulting. Please review our available positions and we encourage you to apply.

Where is your headquarters?

We were based in San Francisco, but we adopted a remote/flexible working style beginning in 2019. We have teammates all over the country and all over the world!

Fully Remote Opportunities

Having a remote and flexible working style was the number 1 request from our team, and while it took some time to implement… we made it happen! At Kruze, we don’t believe that a traditional office culture is necessary. And remote work offers significant benefits:

  • Employees get more time. You’re not commuting. You’re not carrying your laptop to different conference rooms and connecting to wi-fi or display screens. You’re not packing lunches or filling your backpack or briefcase with files and folders to bring home or to work. You have more time to spend with family and/or on leisure activities.
  • Employees save money. Items like gas and tolls, work clothes, parking fees, and other expenses drop when you work from home. In addition, parents may be able to cut back on child care expenses when you’re able to adjust your schedule around school and other activities. And let’s not kid ourselves – employers can save money too on office space and other facility expenses. Plus it reduces recruitment costs, since 54% of workers say they would leave their jobs for positions that offer flexible work times.
  • Employees have less stress. Even before the pandemic, commuting was linked to stress and job burnout. Working from home gives you more opportunities to take walks, eat healthier foods, and improve your work/life balance.

While we’ve fully embraced remote work, we like to get together as one whole team once a year.

What makes Kruze different from other Consultancies?

Three things make Kruze Consulting unique:

  • M&A Advisory: we are so very blessed to participate in 2+ M&A deals with major acquirers, often public companies. Everything that we do for our clients, from Day 1, is in anticipation of an M&A event. We also assist with 2+ venture capital fundraising events every month.
  • Tax: we offer Income Tax preparation, R&D tax credits, and State and Local Tax in-house.
  • Thought leadership: Our CPAs are experts in startup accounting, and we bring best-in-class new technologies to our clients, including innovative AI and accounting automation tools.

What does the average work week look like as a Remote Accountant at Kruze?

After analyzing hundreds of timecards, we can say that the average full-time Kruze Employee works generally predictable hours, a 40-hour work week, with 32 hours billable and 8 hours G&A. Over the course of a year, you will likely work 22 weekend hours: Sometimes that’s an hour every Sunday night, sometimes there’s a crunch Saturday. Unfortunately, there are moments of high workload, when a client is doing a life-changing translation like an M&A exit or VC fundraise.

These are exciting to work on, but it’s difficult to predict when they will happen.

Tell me about the Kruze culture!

So much of our culture is rooted in our Core Values, but to give you a few more examples of how these values show up:

  • Diversity: We are a diverse community and value different backgrounds, ages, genders, lifestyles, and personalities. Balance makes our team successful.
  • Collaboration: The phrase “it takes a village” comes to mind. We take pride in sharing knowledge and best practices with each other.
  • Transparency: On Monday Mornings, we debrief and share with every team member on the previous week’s successes and failures.
  • Respect: Every employee at Kruze is a high-performing professional, and we treat each other with courtesy, politeness and kindness.
  • Fooooood: We like to eat. We like to cook. We like to share pictures and recipes.
  • Wellness: Because of the aforementioned love of food, we like to balance things out with wellness. To us, wellness is a healthy work-life balance, enjoying social outings, sleep, meditation, time with family and friends, exercise, and games. We like to share our experiences with each other.
  • Training opportunities: We offer extensive ongoing training, allowing you to cross-train in accounting, tax & finance, administration, management, and sales if you’re interested in those areas. We’ll also reimburse you for earning your CPA.

Given that Kruze is a remote company, do you ever get together?

Yes! Our last get-together was in Dallas for 3 nights and 3 days. Attendance is encouraged, but optional - there is zero pressure to attend in person. We’re getting better at integrating virtual/remote attendees to most of the sessions!

We typically hold these offsites the first week in May in a central destination in the U.S.

We bond. We learn. We eat!

Is there a “busy season”?

Yes, there are “busy seasons” for our team:

  1. If you are in our Accounting department, the first week of every month is the busiest.
  2. If you are in our Tax Department, April through September is the busiest.
  3. If you are in our State and Local Tax Department, January through June is the busiest.
  4. If you are in our Onboarding Department, January through March is the busiest.

What are some attributes of successful team members at Kruze?

Successful team members share the following attributes:

  • Self starter: At the beginning of each month, you’ll know your schedule and your goals. We are counting on you to follow through on the set schedule, budget, scope, and deadlines. If and when a hurdle appears, we will need you to research possible solutions, ask for advice from fellow teammates, and consistently follow up for a solution.
  • Great communicator: Not everything will go to plan! A successful Kruze teammate manages up and manages down, setting clear expectations with the client and the team.
  • Delivers as promised: Meets deadlines, no excuses. We look for team-wide accountability.

How much does Kruze pay?

We are constantly assessing appropriate pay levels to be competitive with the market. Two excellent resources are:

  1. The Robert Half Salary Guide
  2. The Going Concern Compensation Report

Are you a detail-oriented accountant? Do you want to work from home? Do you have the discipline, maturity and emotional intelligence to work remotely?

If you answered yes to these questions, then look no further than Kruze Consulting. We are hiring to fill a number of remote accounting and remote controller jobs.

Kruze not only “cares more” for our clients, but our appreciative management team also cares for our employees and takes their needs into account as well. Our employees asked for remote work and we answered. In fact, we were one of the first finance companies to go fully remote, even prior to the Covid pandemic.

How are Work-From-Home Positions at Kruze Different From Other Remote Accounting Employers?

Working from home as a remote accountant is a lot like an in-office finance job. We are still responsible for working with and helping clients with their startup finances, accounting and taxes. We still have 1:1 and team meetings (via zoom). We still collaborate with our team (via Slack).

But, working at Kruze is different than working at another accounting firm. Our team of experienced CPA and finance experts love the flexibility and balanced workload that remote accounting offers. It makes achieving a healthy work-life balance a lot easier. Some of the differences include:

  • Greater autonomy. Need to run to an appointment, your child’s school, or just want to take a walk outside? No problem. As long as your clients’ needs are met and your work gets done on time, enjoy.
  • Wider talent pool. At Kruze, we hire the best, and now we’ve extended our potential pool of applicants worldwide.
  • Leadership that cares about you. The wellbeing of our people means a lot to us. We have weekly team meetings to not only check-in, but to work collaboratively on any struggles or bottlenecks, and to celebrate achievements (we love Bonusly and recognize and reward each other with points that can be redeemed for gift cards, charity donations, or to re-gift!). In addition to team meetings, we offer health and wellness tips, recipes, team-building/special interest Slack groups and more!

Sounds great, huh?

Well it is, there are definitely perks to being a remote accountant or remote controller at Kruze. But, we don’t want you to think it is a walk in the park either.

Our 100% fully remote accounting team is BUSY, especially during heavier times like in tax season. They are pros at juggling many hats, ok with working beyond the regular 9-to-5 office hours to serve their clients, and even great at handling and calming down a stressed-out, or demanding client.

Now, do you think you have what it takes to join our Kruze Consulting remote accounting team? Take a look at the job descriptions and career information below:

What are the benefits of a remote accounting job?

Working remotely is a win-win for both the employer and employee. As mentioned above, the employee has much needed flexibility and the ability to achieve a healthy work-life balance. However, according to a recent Forbes article, having work-from-home employees also offers a business benefits as well:

  1. Productivity - Remote workers are an average of 35-40% more productive than their office counterparts, and have measured an output increase of at least 4.4%. This is an obvious win for the employer, but what employee doesn’t feel great after a productive day? Checking off those To-Dos is quite rewarding, wouldn’t you say?
  2. Performance — Remote work autonomy and not being tied to a single location, workers produce results with 40% fewer quality defects.
  3. Engagement — Higher productivity and performance combine to create stronger engagement, or in other words, 41% lower absenteeism.
  4. Retention — Working remotely leads to less turnover. In other words, employees are happier where they are! 54% of employees say they would change jobs for one that offered them more flexibility, which results in an average of 12% turnover reduction after a remote work agreement is offered.
  5. Profitability — Organizations save an average of $11,000 per year per part-time remote worker, or 21% higher profitability. Employees save on work clothes (yes, you can work in your pjs if you want), gas for commuting gas, take-out lunches, etc.

What is the worst part about working at Kruze?

Now the yucky stuff.

  • Timecards: As an accounting firm, we do timecards. Not the most fun thing, but a very necessary evil. Because we operate a remote firm, we have no other way of managing the team’s workload, and we want everyone’s schedule to be balanced. Because most of our work is done on a Fixed Fee, timecards let us know which projects are profitable. Recording by the end of the week (Friday night), at the very latest, is mandatory.
  • The M&A/VC diligence work: It comes straight out of the left field and there is no planning for it. While we absolutely factor in some cushion to account for this, you might have to work late, or a weekend. With a lot of money at stake and tight deadlines, tensions can run high. Finally, M&A work also means having to expect and be comfortable with change: the vast majority of our clients start small, grow quickly, and get acquired or graduate to in-house accounting teams.
  • Exposure to Many Clients and Industries: While this is a benefit, it’s also a drawback. There will often be competing requests from clients, none of whom realize that you work with other clients! It is critical that you communicate your boundaries with the client and the team frequently and ahead of time. For example, “I’m sorry but I’m booked for the next two days, can I get this done for you on Friday?” and “Just a heads up, I’ll be on PTO in August for 2 weeks with no access to WiFi. If you need anything before then, please let me know with ample time. Otherwise, please feel free to reach out to Bob with any urgent questions while I’m away.”

What is the best part about working at Kruze?

  • The Team: We’re a diverse bunch, experts in our respective fields, and eager to help each other and clients. We hope that team members will work with Kruze for a minimum of 2 years to maintain a consistent relationship with our team members and clients. The relationships that are formed between our remote team members and our clients need to be consistent.
  • The M&A Work: As a firm, we are blessed to assist with 2+ M&A transactions per month. You’ll get an opportunity to work with the Big 4 M&A teams, top-tier law firms, and investment bankers. There is no better resume-building opportunity!
  • Exposure to Many Clients and Industries: Exposure to many mission-based clients and industries: Too often in the Accounting/Finance/Tax Industry, professionals become pigeonholed in a certain industry, whether that be SaaS, eCommerce, or Manufacturing. At Kruze, you’ll have the opportunity to learn multiple disciplines and work with a wide variety of high-visibility clients and find your passion. If you prefer to work with a specific industry, we can help pair you up with your interests and skill set. If you want to explore a new area or industry, we’ll provide you with mentorship.
