Video: What are the metrics for leadership you should take into account?

Today I’m here to talk with you about metrics and KPIs.

I’m not going to talk with you about them in the traditional sense of resource allocation. Other ways that finance professionals typically talk about those things.

Instead, I want to talk with you about them in the context of your vision. And I’ve found that less weathered CEOs and leaders are resistant to metrics because they don’t want to be pinned down by those metrics, they want the flexibility to go outside of whatever metrics they set.

But when you think about your vision, it’s your job to conceive of vision, communicate it, and then execute against it. Metrics and KPIs are one way to communicate your vision.

And so, you should share them. You should share them with your team. You should share them with your board and you should embrace that accountability towards them.

If you don’t reach those metrics or your KPIs. That’s okay, you can have a story about why you’ve chosen to pivot or what’s changed to make the original metrics irrelevant.

But, in any case, you want to have a destination for the team to be marching toward.

There is a saying that says: “If you don’t know where you are going, you will never reach your destination.” Metrics give you that destination to reach towards.
